What is a multi-step form?
Instead of showing every field on one page, a multi-step form asks one or a few questions per step. A progress bar shows how far the visitor has come. The first questions are easy to click, contact details come at the end.
It feels shorter even when it asks more. And because every answer can decide the next step, each visitor only sees the questions that fit.
Plan the flow
- Set the goal. What should come out at the end: an enquiry, an appointment, a price or an application?
- Collect questions and cut them. Only ask what you really need for a first answer.
- Choose the order. Easy choice questions first, free text and contact details last.
- Draw the paths. Which answer leads to which question? Who is not a fit and gets their own ending?
Tip: label buttons the way visitors think, for example "Get a quote" instead of "Submit".
Build it in WordPress
In Funnelforms you build the flow on a canvas: every step is a card, every path a line. In the Logic tab every answer gets its own target, and "Otherwise go to" catches everyone else. Fields that only fit certain answers are shown with "Show this field".
The logic check finds dead ends, unreachable steps and rules that never apply before visitors do. Pro adds rules with AND and OR, calculations with a live result and quizzes.

On the phone and fast
- Large answer tiles instead of small radio buttons, with an optional automatic move to the next step after a tap.
- Preview on desktop, tablet and mobile as a test run before you publish.
- The form script with styles is under 35 KB (gzip) and works with page caching and optimisation plugins.
Measure and improve
Statistics show for each step how many visitors reach it and how many drop off there. With "Show on canvas" the numbers sit right on your cards. Pro adds sources and campaigns, the strongest paths and drop-off per field.
If you are not sure which question works better, test it: an A/B test in Pro compares up to four versions of a step or two designs and adopts the winner at the end.
Tip: change one thing at a time, or you will not know what made the difference.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps make sense?
As many as you need for a good first answer, with one or a few questions per step. Statistics will tell you if a step is one too many.
Does this work with Funnelforms Free?
Yes. Steps, the progress bar, paths per answer and statistics per step are part of Free, with no volume limits.
What happens to visitors who leave?
In Pro, Funnelforms can save the answers after every step. Anyone who has already entered their email address can get a reminder with a link back to their answers.
